Isn’t it funny things you do, just because your Mom did. Adding cabbage to my sloppy joes is something I have always done because that’s the way my Mom made them growing up. To some it may sound strange, but I can’t think of eating sloppy joes without the texture and flavor of cabbage with the sweet and spicy sauce. I love it!! I am sure my Mom added the cabbage back in the day to help the meal stretch, but it has become one of my favorite quick, go-to meals when I am in a hurry. I served these sloppy joes with a simple spinach salad and some peppered yams (that I will blog about tomorrow) and it was an inexpensive, healthy, and simple meal. Great for this time of year. Enjoy 🙂

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs. lean ground beef or turkey
  • 1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 onion chopped
  • 1 stalk celery diced
  • 2 Tbs. white or apple vinegar
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 can tomato paste
  • 2 Tbs. brown sugar or more if you like it more sweet
  • 2 Tbs. mustard
  • 1/2 cup green cabbage sliced thin (optional)
  • Season with garlic powder and salt
  • 6-8 1 pkg. Hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Saute the celery and onion with the ground beef, until the beef is browned and the vegetables soft. Drain any excess grease from the pan. If you choose to add cabbage, shred it thin and place in hamburger mixture with onions and let steam for a minute to wilt the cabbage. Add the remaining ingredients. Season the mixture with the desired seasonings--salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc. Simmer for 30 minutes on the stove and serve on hamburger buns.

Notes

*HEALTHIER OPTION: Use ground turkey instead of beef. Serve meat mixture in a lettuce wrap or bunless to save on calories. Cut back on the sugar to cut a few extra calories as well.
