Stromboli Joes

This may seem strange, but I LOVE a good, juicy sloppy joe!  I know they are not the highest quality dinner I could feed my family, but it is comfort food at it’s best for us.  I love the Buffalo Joes I posted about back in the fall, but these Stromboli Joes are now my new favorite.

I love the twist of Italian seasoning and sausage.  It gives these sandwiches more of a meatball twist, rather than the traditional sloppy joe flavor.  The broiled cheese layer on the bun adds an incredible flavor & keeps the bun nice & crisp until the very last bite. Serve them with homemade french fries and fry sauce (or sweet potato fries) and you have a quick weeknight meal that will satisfy one & all!

I am so excited to introduce you to one of my new favorite products! Thrive Life’s Tomato Powder if a must-have in your pantry. It’s so simple to add in recipes in the place of tomato paste or sauce. Simply sprinkle the powder over your meat, add a little water and you have the equivalent of a can of tomato sauce. So easy and much less sodium and cost. Get your’s today while it’s on sale!

Ingredients

  • 2 lb. lean ground beef or turkey (can use Thrive Life Beef)
  • 1 onion diced small
  • 2 tsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tsp. oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. Italian seasoning
  • 1 tsp. parsley
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 1 can tomato sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. salt or as needed
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan cheese shredded
  • 8-10 hamburger buns
  • 3-4 Tbs. butter melted
  • Garlic spread or garlic seasoning
  • 1-1 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

Instructions

  • Dice the onions into small pieces. In a saute pan, brown the beef (or turkey) with the diced onions until the beef is no longer red and the onions are soft. To the meat add the seasonings. Add the tomato sauce and ketchup. Let the sauce simmer with the meat for a few minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Place the hamburger buns on a cookie sheet opened up, flat. Melt the butter in a bowl. With a pastry brush, brush the melted butter onto each of the buns. Sprinkle with the garlic seasoning and place 1-2 t. of shredded mozzarella cheese on one side of each bun. Place in the oven on broil for 20-45 seconds, or until the cheese begins to melt and they become slightly golden brown. Once they are golden, remove them from the oven and place a good helping of the meat mixture on to each set of buns. Serve warm.
  • DIRECTIONS USING THRIVE BEEF: Place the freeze dried ground beef into a bowl and cover with water. Let soak for 10-15 minutes. In a saute pan that is on medium heat, drizzle with a little olive oil. Drain the water from the ground beef. Add the hydrated beef to the hot oil. Add the Thrive onions and saute until golden brown. To the meat add the seasonings. Add the tomato sauce (or Thrive Tomato Powder and water) and ketchup. Let the sauce simmer with the meat for a few minutes until the sauce begins to thicken. Place the hamburger buns on a cookie sheet opened up, flat. If using Thrive Life Butter, prepare the butter in a small bowl with water and then use as normal. Serve warm.
